K57 to Air Long Lost Concert

On June 23rd, 1946 servicemen on Guam took a break from their post-war duties and took in the music of the NOB Receiving Station Band and their program of Big Band and Swing Music. The concert was recorded and mastered to 16-inch transcription discs to be played on military stations throughout the world on the One Night Stand Program.

Fast forward 58years, when the discs found their way to EBay. Tom Walsh found the listing and successfully bid for the discs. Unfortunately, there were no transcription players on Guam . A transcription disc is similar to a regular turntable, but larger, to accommodate the 16 inch diameter discs. Back to EBay for a turntable capable of playing the disc. One was eventually found, but it was not in working order. Dick

Manns of the Marianas Amateur Radio Club took it home and repaired it for the first time since 1946, the music of the NOB band was heard on Guam .

CLEAN UP

The discs had suffered some from the years of storage and there was considerable surface noise, pops and clicks. Our radio station production facility digitized the audio, then, using high end noise reduction software, cleaned up the audio and packaged it to contemporary broadcast standards.

On the 60th anniversary of the concert, Newstalk K57 is proud to present this concert to you. Join us Friday evening at 6:30 for this unprecedented broadcast event. In addition to the great music, host Bob Gaeth will bring the era to life with stories and snapshots of life of Guam in the years shortly after end of the Second World War

One Night Stand is proudly presented by Newstalk K57, Atkins Kroll, Tanks-A-Lot and American Moving.
